What is a Sugar Plum? Sweet visions of sewing are in store for you!

So, what is a sugar plum, anyway? Visiting the theater for the Nutcracker Ballet was part of my childhood holiday traditions. My favorite scene? The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The delicate, twinkling music and bright, sparkling dancers prancing en pointe is absolute magic. Like the Christmas season itself, it stirs wonder and joy. Then we have Clement Clark Moore with the familiar poetry of children dreaming of sugar plums in A Visit from St. Nicholas. But why sugar plum? I decided it was time to do a little research and found the original sugar plum was much like it sounds. In the Georgian era, plums were often preserved by boiling them in sugar. This may have been the beginning of what later became a classic Christmas treat made with a combination of fruits, nuts and natural sugars. The taste was sweet and earthy and was in fact quite a healthy snack. Through the years, treats made by layering sugar over a nut or piece of fruit (panning) took on the name of sugar plum. As production became more efficient, this sweet little luxury could be found in confectionaries across Europe and the term sugar plum was adopted in popular vernacular as a symbol of everything sweet and wonderful in the world.

Translating the idea of sugar plums into sewing terms, I'd say we have some sweet visions in store for you this season! Blue Jay Peppered Cotton really POPS when paired with the delicate designs of the Sweet Abigail collection by Tessie Fay for Windham Fabrics.
