Who Inspires You? Here's one story...

It would seem everyone was at QuiltCon... except me (and maybe you?). But that's ok! I've been taking in all the glorious quilty goodness from afar, following my friends and famous quilty people on their journey seeking the best of the best in quilty inspiration. Sooooo many fantastic quilts, so much heart. As I was drifting down the rabbit hole of #quiltcon I was stopped mid-scroll by the image below:
First of all, that gorgeous quilt! I immediately recognized it as Free Wheeling Single Girl by Denyse Schmidt; one of the first quilt patterns I ever purchased so many years ago. And here it absolutely shines in some of my all-time favorite fabrics, primarily by Anna Maria Horner. Obviously, I was smitten. Then the kismet of having both of those brilliant designers together for this picture! Be still my quilting heart. It's safe to say these two women, pioneers in the modern quilting movement, are at least partly responsible for what has become my addiction (let's call it passion -- that sounds better, ha-ha). So what's the story behind this serendipitous moment in time?
When I reached out to the maker, Jana Florence, she told me she was still in disbelief. I mean, it's what us quilters dream of! Her journey to QuiltCon was made with her friend, Linda Wahl, who introduced Jana to quilting 30 years ago. Jana says Linda has been her inspiration as she is the one who "has held my hand through the process the whole time. She introduced me to both these designers and also quilts my quilts for me." Yes, Linda did indeed quilt this one, and doesn't that make this story complete? Best quilting friends, one the maker, one the quilter, both artists -- together, meet the gurus behind the quilt and fabric design, culminating in one inspiring photo we all can appreciate. Did I mention Denyse and Anna Maria signed Jana's quilt? That's it! I'm going to QuiltCon!
In the meantime, I will continue to find great inspiration closer to home. Have you met Ramona Sorensen? You likey recognize her as our custom quilting specialist but did you know she is also a math wiz with a knack for twisting, turning and drafting block designs? She could honestly do it in her sleep (and from what I hear, she does)! She has the skills to conjure up and simplify pattern instructions like you wouldn't believe. As a professional quilter who has been published in quilting periodicals more times than I can count, she is truly an inspiration to me.
We're loving this current trend -- taking a traditional quilt block with some history and enlarging it for a modern twist. That's exactly what Ramona did when she designed this easy-to-assemble quilt featuring the classic Broken Dishes block. A lively blend of blues heightens the mod feel. Our kit includes the pattern, as well as fat quarters and yardage for piecing the 90" x 90" quit top and binding for $169.99. We also love the custom quilting design she added to finish this cute quilt. Come by and see it on display at the shop and while you're here, give Ramona a wave (or better yet, some dark chocolate)!
Stay tuned for an exciting new pattern program in the works with Ramona.
HINT: it involves YouTube and free, scrap-busting pattern downloads!
