It's considered a classic quilter's cannon, "Measure twice. Cut once." We testify it's often a lesson learned the hard way. In light of another hard lesson I recently fumbled my way through, I propose we add another step to this sage sewing advice. "Read the pattern three times... then measure twice and cut once." Case in point:


Excited to cut into a beautiful new stack of Liberty of London fat quarters, I casually browsed over what was sure to be a quick and easy pattern. I skimmed a second time, picked up my ruler and confidently started cutting. 300 squares later, I marveled at the amount of fabric left over. It wasn't until I sat down at my machine that I realized my squares weren't going to fit. Not even close! They should have been rectangles. Off to the quilt shop I went to buy 20 more fat quarters and start again. Please, tell me I'm not alone. Had I read the pattern a third time with care, I might have easily noted the difference and so I implore you, "Read three times, measure twice and cut once."


I must say, the Confetti quilt pattern by Tied with a Ribbon was indeed quick and easy to make when followed correctly. Imagine that! I love the way these delicate florals play together against a subtle green background. Come see it at the shop and grab a kit! 


To be clear; I'm not unhappy to have a gorgeous stack of Liberty of London squares pre-cut. I'm now in the market to find a pattern using approximately 300 3.5" squares. Recommendations appreciated.
